LAWS111 COURSE SUMMARY Topic 1 Development of the Common Law in England Customary Law in Pre-Norman England Celtic tribes in Pre-Norman England were governed by customary laws these laws were passed down verbally from one generation to the next, and were enforced by their recognition and general acceptance. Customary laws covered aspects of society vital to everyday existence, such as personal protection and property rights. Because habits and attitudes differed from tribe-to-tribe, customary law varied significantly throughout England. Between AD43 and AD410 England was under Roman occupation the Romans brought with them a sophisticated system of codified law, but it was only applied to Roman citizens.
