WEEK 12 INJUNCTIONS AND DECLARATIONS Section 21 of the Queensland Wetlands Protection Act (the QWPA) provides that it is an offence to damage or destroy designated wetland areas. In the event of infringement of this section, the QWPA provides that the court may order payment of a fine of up to $50,000 and/or a maximum of 2 years imprisonment. Coastal Developments Company (CDC) recently acquired a large parcel of waterfront land along Coolum Creek and the Maroochy River, which are designated wetland areas. CDC intends to develop exclusive waterfront residences on the land. To facilitate the development CDC has engaged contractors to clear the land of all vegetation, including mangroves which impede water views, to start work next weekend.
