Standing is important because Locus standi: to commence judicial review you must have right of standing, some interest at stake. Have to show that interest that has been affected Private rights easy to see, like in contract or someone riding into your house and you suffer damages Seeking that public authorities comply with the law: public rights, if very concerned not enough needs to have interest If applicant is unable to show that any private right of theirs have been interfered with they need to establish standing The rational for the distinction is that the courts time should not be taken up with busy bodies with no specific interest in the litigation.
