Explain the term redox Redox describes the chemical reactions that occur amongst atoms when they undergo a change in oxidation state and change oxidation number. Oxidation means the loss of electrons. Reduction means the gain of electrons. Therefore oxidation is the increase of oxidation number whilst reduction is the decrease in oxidation number. 3. The pH of the electrolyte in a lead acid battery varies according to the state of charge. Describe how the pH would change as a battery discharged and was recharged. Due to the fact that pH has a log relationship with the number of H+ ions hence concentration. As a lead acid battery is discharged, H+ ions are consumed.
